ABOUT THE ARTIST
My name is Sara Norwood and I am a self taught artist local to the Adelaide hills in South Australia. I've always loved drawing and had an interest in nature.
I only studied art until year 11 in high school, because I realised how much essay writing was involved in year 12, which was not a strong point of mine. I decided not to pursue art as a career back then, as I knew it was difficult to make it as asuccessful artist, but to continue it as a hobby. Art is an integral part of who I am, and when I was younger was how I expressed and released my emotions.
With my interest in the environment I went on to study Biodiversity and Conservation at University, obtaining both a Bachelor degree and an Honours degree in the subject.
It was during my first year of University that I picked up a paintbrush and decided to have a go at painting flowers. I painted an Agapanthus flower, which turned out really well. Not long after, I tried my hand at painting birds. My first bird painting was in 2009 of a pair of Superb Fairy Wrens, which continues to be a top seller in my cards and prints. It was then that I discovered that I could paint birds, and flowers, well and in my own unique self taught style.
And that is how it started. From there I painted more flowers and birds, and a few abstract pieces. Over the years I have decided to combine my art and science degrees, to focus on Australian native plants and birds.
I have now been selling my art in the form of blank greeting cards ad matted prints for a few years, which are popular at the Stirling Market. I've had numerous of my wonderful customers send my Australian artwork overseas, which I love hearing about.
Currently I am working on writing and illustrating my own children's books related to the environment and what I learned at University.
